Grandma’s Girls

Lots of routine, mundane things happened today.  I got my oil changed in my van this morning, went grocery shopping,  exercised with Mimi, worked on SugarDoodle, cleaned the house and watched a movie with my kiddos.  There are only a couple more days before school starts and we’re trying to enjoy every last minute together.

20150102_180150Andy, Jaron and Trevin went to Tae Kwon Do tonight.  Ashlyn, Emalee and Amelia had a sleep over tonight at my mom’s house…a girls night out.  I’m sure they won’t be sad they missed Tae Kwon Do.  Spending time with Amelia and Grandma Kluse trumps sports any day!

I also made an awesome veggie dip today.  You just mix 2 cups of cottage cheese in the blender with one Fiesta Ranch packet.  Yum!

I had to also include a picture of my computer screen.  If I ever leave my computer for a few minutes, I know Jaron has been there because my moniter will say, “I like trains.”  Love him!

Kissing 2014 Goodbye

Our celebration started around 6 p.m.  One of my favorite memories of the evening is Mimi pulling out headbands with “2013” on them.  She said, “We’re going to party like it was 2013 because it’s the only thing I could find!”

My mom came over and we made a dish we haven’t made for a long time, stuffed grapeleaves!  Mmmm…  Years ago my mom had two Armenian sisters as Visiting Teachers.  They would occasionally bring her a plate of grapeleaves.  Di-VINE!  In time, my mom asked them how to make them.

The girls played with their Lego sets for a while.  All the boys (but Trevin) watched an old but favorite movie, “Crocodile Dundee 2″.

While they did that, Mimi, my mom, Trevin and myself put together a 500 piece puzzle.  It sure tested our patience a few times!!  ((For the record, Trevin only helped for a short while but he did come back as we were nearing completion.)) However, we completed it just fifteen minutes shy of the New Year.

Jaron on the other hand, was invited to celebrate New Year’s with his friend Anna Neff (her family) and other friends from school.  He’s growing up too quickly!!!  He had a blast and came home with a ton of junk food (some of which I’m sure will be used to bribe his siblings!)

None of us are the stay-up-late kind of folks (excluding Opi). Once everyone left, we were all in bed by 12:15 a.m.  What party poopers, huh?

P.S. – Ashlyn wanted to take a picture of Andy and I; however, she ended up taking a video clip of us instead of taking a picture….too funny.

{The big day}

image

Today was the big day. The kids and I went to the care facility (or as Emmy called it, “Grandma’s daycare”) to bring her home. We loaded up a cart of all her belongings and packed them in the car. On the way home she asked me to stop by the grocery store so she could get a few things.

We spent most of the afternoon together, getting her house organized just so….getting some laundry started and making sure she is taken care of.  So grateful she is doing well, all things considered.

{Marissa’s baptism}

image

A few things about today…..

* My flower blossomed this morning making me happy.  Isn’t it beautiful?

* My niece, Marissa, was baptized this morning.  She had asked me to lead the music and for Andy to be one of the witnesses.  I had a hard time looking at Marissa and Trent while I was standing up front doing the music because I would choke up every time….which made it so I couldn’t sing.  There was a sweet spirit there.  Mimi gave a talk on the Holy Ghost and did a great job.

image

* I made around a million phone calls (okay slightly exaggerated) for next week’s upcoming day of service.  I am humbled at the level of generosity in our Stake.  I am surrounded by good people.

* All the kids had a game today. Jaron had a basketball game and the rest had  soccer games.  They did well.

* I am grateful for all my blessings. I have a wonderful husband who sets a great example for me and the kids. He is proactive and sees something needs to be done and does it. He does his best to relieve my stress when he sees I am maxed out. Grateful.

* On our way to Marissa’s baptism, we passes my mom’s care facility. Emalee got all excited and said, “Mom, mom….that’s Grandma’s daycare!” I laughed so hard! I texted her later and she said, “All too true!” John and his family went to visit mom today and he texted me some pictures of Hazel doing some exercises with mom…cute.

{An ice cream visit}

image

We went and visited my mom at her care facility.  They serve free ice cream on M, W or F.  So we chatted over ice cream about her doctor visit today.  She showed us a picture on her phone of her most recent x-rays.  She said the doctor was pleased with her progress.  Yeah!

Trevin helped me cook dinner tonight and while we were waiting for the timer to go off, Trevin was being super silly. I caught a few of his faces but they were hilarious.

image

One thing Jaron always does before going to bed is lay down with Charlie….wherever he is in the house and pet him foe five minutes or so. He has a really special bond with Charlie.  I had to capture this nightly ritual….

{Focusing on recovery}

image

This poor gal has had quite the day.  They got her up and walking a little bit today but it was overwhelmingly painful.

image

I spent the whole evening up with her, leaving the hospital around 10:45.  She seemed a bit better when I left versus when I came.

The first part of my day was spent at a mormon.org blogging conference. I was able to meet some amazing women/bloggers.  Two of them were part of the program…..

image

I met Christian and Stephanie Nielson, both of whom survived a plane crash.  Stephanie’s body was over 80% burned.   She shared an inspiring message.

image

I also met singer/songwriter, Brooke White.  She was on the television show “American Idol” six years ago.   She has a beautiful voice.  What a treat!

{Surgery complete….recovery begins}

image

My mom had both knees replaced today.  She was doing well after surgery, all things considered. The surgeon said it went well, very routine, no surprises. The medication made her tired and nauseated.  When I left tonight, the nurse was coming in to give her some more medicine to help settle her stomach.  Hoping tomorrow is a better day.

{Christmas 2013}

Our Christmas always starts in the scriptures…..  We read Luke 2 and discuss every two or three verses.

After scriptures, we ate breakfast which traditionally consists of German Pancakes.

Libby and I decided before Mom’s birthday to take her to a play she has wanted to see…Les Miserables.  It is a spoof on the play Les Miserable. It was hilarious and we had a lot of fun.

{Inspire my life – preview}

2013-04-03 16.05.31

Through my website, SugarDoodle, I was given the opportunity of helping promote a lecture/music series called, “Inspire my life”….the theme for this year’s conference is “Begin within”.  I have worked with Michael and Chad for months on this project and they are doing a wonderful thing.  In fact, Michael is the one that started the E.F.Y. (Especially for Youth) program.  Unlike E.F.Y., Time Our for Women, Education Week and more….this one is non-denominational.  It is a program that was developed to help inspire people and uplift each other, regardless of religion.  This particular conference was directed to women, but they have other sessions for youth, singles and parents.  Although it wasn’t the ideal day for the preview conference (Easter weekend, Spring Break, General YW Broadcast and more)……we went forward anyway.  Here the three of us are pictured at the check-in table.

This is a picture of my mom and her good friend LaRee chatting during lunch:

The program itself was wonderful, inspiring and just plain fun.  I wished more people could have come.  It was essentially a dress rehearsal.  They gave everyone feedback sheets and we critiqued or evaluated everyone’s performance or presentation.  They start their tour in just a couple weeks in St. George.  I’m honored to be involved in such a wonderful project….there will be much more to come on this.

On the home front, much was happening.  Andy dropped Jaron off in Provo at BYU for the Pow Wow.  He came back and dropped Trevin off at Mimi’s to be her helper while Andy and Emalee went and cleaned up soccer fields and painted the markings for this week’s games.  Andy was joined by six or so other parents and it took them almost all day to complete….he was exhausted.  He said he gained a new appreciation for his soccer coach and other volunteers.  He never knew it was that much work to paint the soccer fields.

All-in-all it was a good day.

{A friendly minute-to-win-it competition}

What a fun night.  I invited the Kluse’s over for dinner and a minute-to-win-it competition.

For dinner, everyone was able to build their own pizza.  We baked the crust and then each person could top them with their favorites.  We had tons of options and it turned out pretty tasty.

Afterwards, we had several games ready-to-go.  Boy, the kids REALLY got into it.  They all wanted to have several tries at each game….it was cute.  In the end, first place went to Ashlyn…second place went to Alton and third place went to Jaron.  Actually, there were seven places…not three.  I wrapped up seven small gifts and put them on the mantle.  As I announced 7th place, that child got to pick their gift but couldn’t open it….and so on until there was only one gift left.  Ashlyn could take the one left or anyone else’s.  It was the bonus of getting first place.  In the end everyone got something and all of their gifts were different so they were excited for each other.  It was a fun night for all.

{Here and there}

2013-01-17 21.21.59

The day started like any other, we’re pretty much in a routine around here.  However, mid-morning Mimi called and asked if she could come over for a minute.  She wanted to get out of the house and decided to take a walk down to my house with Parker and Keltie.  We chatted at the door for a little bit, but they were both pretty taken with our lego table.  Parker especially didn’t want to leave.  Mimi and I kept telling them both that they would be back at our house on Sunday to celebrate Jaron’s birthday and he could play with it again.  That meant very little to him as it meant he couldn’t play with it “now”.  Too cute.

2013-01-17 18.27.05

After school, I dropped Ashlyn off at Baylee’s house to play.  They were both SO excited to get some time together.  They haven’t had a play date in forever.

So I headed to pick up Jaron from school and then I took Emalee to her Mathnasium appointment.  While we were there, Jaron and I played UNO several times (I lost most of the time).

On the way home, I saw these fun snowmen on the side of the road.  They hold a sign saying something to the effect that snowmen can be rebuilt but that people can’t and to please slow down.  Next we headed to the grocery store and ran into my mom.  No, Trevin is not punching Emalee’s face….he was just goofing off.

{Christmas Eve 2012}

We spent Christmas Eve at my mom’s house with Jeff and John’s family.  We made dinner and enjoyed lots of munchies.  My time was spent holding Hazel as much as I could….love her!

Throughout the evening, John had the kids tracking Santa using an Ipad app.  Amelia and Ashlyn were obsessed with checking his status every five minutes.  It was cute.

Later in the evening we opened presents.  Grandma gave the kids books, which they loved.
