General Conference-Saturday

One of my favorite weekends of the year… General Conference. Oh how I love hearing from our leaders. This conference was especially historic in that three new apostles were called: Elder Ronald A. Rasband, Elder Gary E. Stevenson and Elder Dale G. Renlund. I am excited to get to know them better.

There were so many spiritual insights and tidbits; however, here are some of my favorite take-away’s from today:

• We didn’t marry perfection, we married potential. (Elder Robert D. Hales)

• You are rich if you can live happily within your means. (Elder Robert D. Hales)

• We must be engaged in intentional parenting. (Bradley D. Foster quoting Boyd K. Packer)

• There is no darkness so dense, so menacing, or so difficult that it cannot be overcome by light. (Elder Vern P. Stanfill)

• Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot cure. (Elder Dallin H. Oaks)

• Be peaceful. Believe in God. Be faithful. You are doing better than you think you are. (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland)

The evening finished with my boys going to the priesthood session of conference. Love that Trevin wanted to go with the others even though he’s only eleven.

I told Andy today that General Conference is just getting better and better.  I look forward to the inspirational messages they share with us.  I try all in my power to help my children look forward to it as well.  As a child, I didn’t like watching conference….it was boring to me.  I was naughty that way. My poor mom……

After making our traditional German pancakes for breakfast,  we all sat down and watched General Conference.  In the past I have done conference baskets and conference packets; however, this time I bought each of us a journal to take notes.

For the most part the kids did great.  We would sometimes review the talks during the music if they had questions. It was pretty remarkable that two women gave the opening or closing prayer in various sessions of conference….a historic first.

Emalee wasn’t able to take notes so I did make her a conference packet….

Jaron wanted me to take a picture of him with Charlie…

After the morning session finished, we went outside in the front yard.  John and Liberty had walked over to say hello.  We visited with them for a little bit.  After they left, Andy and the kids started playing four square.

Meanwhile, I got some bread for the ducks that frequent our pond.  We call them Bert and Ernie.

It really was a beautiful day in every way.

{Conference Baskets}

I have a tradition of giving my kids “conference baskets” instead of “Easter baskets”.  They think it’s better anyway because they get two conference baskets a year instead of one Easter basket.   They were all being their silly selves today but they enjoyed some of the new things they got and they listened to all of conference.  We’ve been working for weeks to memorize all of the apostles and head auxillary leaders.  We’ve read biographies, played games and it really helped.  My kids knew who was speaking before it was posted on the screen.  (((Proud Mama moment))).  We learned a lot together and I have to say I am impressed that even Emalee can name them all.  Go Day Family!!!!

{Priesthood Session at Conference Center}

Val, Trent and Andy had the unique opportunity to attend the Priesthood Session of General Conference at the conference center.  They had a great time together and as is tradition, they went out to dinner afterwards.  Meanwhile, my mom and I hung out and made stepping stones for my garden of the kids hand prints.  This is how they turned out:

{Conference Baskets}

Each of the kids had their dental cleaning/check up today after school.  All went well.  Trevin and Emmy don’t have any cavities this time around (yeah).  However, Jaron and Ashlyn both have two.  It has been a while since Ash has had any.  I made appointments to return and get those taken are of.  : (

After soccer practice tonight, the kids and I delivered Conference baskets to my Visiting teaching sisters and their families as well as Andy’s home teaching families.  It is a tradition we have done now for some time and we all look forward to it.  The two big yellow buckets are for two larger families and the smaller baskets are for two couples.  Regardless, they’re full of fun snacks/goodies, juice, conference packets, pencils and more.  My kiddos really look forward to getting their baskets each conference.

{Conference is coming!}

It’s coming….I can feel it!  What is “it”?  General Conference.  I love that conference is in the spring and can help our spirits “rise again”….just love the “fresh feeling” of conference weekend and spring.  Looking back, as a child I really loved conference but ONLY because we wouldn’t have church.  I never wanted to sit and listen to them speak….I dreaded that part.  I would see my mom cry, being moved by their talks, and I would tease her.  Oh, I was so, so awful!  However, I have vowed to do better…starting with my own family.  For the last few weeks we have been studying the life of each of the apostles.  We have read stories about their youth and interesting facts about each of them.  All of us, even Emalee, can name each apostle by their full names.  We played a matching game last weekend with all of their names and pictures.  Tonight I played a trivia game with them for about an hour.  For each correct answer they got two jelly beans.  Andy was the keeper of the jelly beans.  The kids were quick to point out when he sneaked some without answering any questions.  I would hear one of the kids say, “That’s not fair dad!” and I would know what happened.  All in all, conference around here is like Christmas….we all love it.

Here is one of my favorite quotes about conference (by Elder Paul V. Johnson):

“Decide now to make general conference a priority in your life. Decide to listen carefully and follow the teachings that are given. Listen to or read the talks more than once to better understand and follow the counsel. By doing these things, the gates of hell will not prevail against you, the powers of darkness will be dispersed from before you, and the heavens will shake for your good.”
